a ) Bishop and a-pawn against knight
In accordance with fundamental didactic principles, first we will examine most simple positions, in which – due to unlucky placement at the edge of the board – real knight value is much lesser than bishop’s. The least favourable is the case with the rim pawn on the seventh rank, when the weaker side has the only one chance for recovery. If the bishop is “wrong-squared”, Black can escape only by drawing the king in front of the pawn. If the knight is “destined” to keep the promotion square, the white will easily destroy its blockade. White to move wins, avoiding the opponent’s stalemate defence.
