3.2.3. Knight versus Three Pawns
Three pawns are more powerful than knight and generally win since knight is unable to achieve the absolute blockade. The knight may only draw against connected pawns or pawns very near each other provided it is strongly supported by the king. A typical case of a successful blockade is shown in the following diagram – in order to correctly evaluate the position it is crucial that the three pawns have not yet reached the fifth rank.
