On the basis of the forgoing analysis we may conclude that White could not win a similar position with the black pawn at a2. However, with a blocked pawn at a3 the chances of winning exist provided the black king has not yet reached the square in front of the pawn! This case is nicely demonstrated in the following study by N. Grigoriev (1933). If the black king were on h7, the position would be drawn; Black also draws all positions with the white h-pawn nearer to its initial square since the knight is too far and cannot organize the defence from the rear. The evaluation of this position depends on who has the move.
