When the pawns are on adjacent files, Black has a new motif – the pawn exchange making the realisation of advantage much more difficult. Especially when the king is not near its pawn – the knight’s task is not only to protect the pawn but also prevent the exchange. This position arose in the game Ebralidze – Bondarevski (USSR Championship, 1937).
