Black has some drawing possibilities only when his far-advanced passed pawn ties down the knight while the enemy king can be prevented from attacking the other pawn. However, White may still win provided he is in a position to “re-distribute” duties: the knight should be able to protect the pawn from the front and the king should be in the square of the black passed pawn. Such an instructive case is shown in the following ending erroneously evaluated by Y. Averbakh.
