Converting advantage into victory is much more difficult when the pawn is on the b- or g-file. Let us consider a typical position with the pawn on the seventh rank, analyzed by J. Kling as far back as 1867. Although the white king supports his pawn, the road to victory is not in the offing since Black has taken up the ideal defensive position.
