The problems of converting material superiority into victory are much greater if pawns are on adjacent files since this situation considerably increases the likelihood of material reduction. But with a strong, very distant passed pawn and centralised pieces that prevent the reduction, a win is still possible. This is borne out also by the ending of the game Mason – Reggio, Monte Carlo, 1903.
