The knowledge of the theory of critical squares is crucial in order to choose the right strategy. The next example is a case in point.
At first glance it might appear that Black being nearer to critical squares will draw easily. Nevertheless, the position is won since White will not direct his action towards the c6-square, but rather towards the a6-square which is much farther from the black king.

 

Key squares. White has to go for key square a6! Black can easily defend square c6.
