The farther the pawn majority has advanced, the more dangerous it is than the passed pawn thanks to a latent threat of a breakthrough. The following position arose in the game Nimcovich – Chigorin, Karlsbad, 1907, and had long been considered as won for White. Black to play draws despite White’s possible breakthrough at the right moment. This was pointed out by the former World Champion Max Euwe.

Vlado Kovacevic is a chess grandmaster and an endgame expert. He very successfully competed on the national team. From 2000 – 2004, he acted as selector of the Croatian Men’s national team. He is also a well-known chess author.
