The weaker side has more difficulty defending when its pawns are near the edge of the board since sometimes the lack of manoeuvring room decides. First we shall examine two characteristic cases with blockaded pawns where the better king position is decisive. First case is from the game Gurgenidze – Averbakh (USSR Championship, 1961) . White to move wins since he can seize the opposition on the seventh rank!

Vlado Kovacevic is a chess grandmaster and an endgame expert. He very successfully competed on the national team. From 2000 – 2004, he acted as selector of the Croatian Men’s national team. He is also a well-known chess author.
