P-28 (Common Square)

Basic Motifs E-book: Pawn Endgames K+2P vs K Must-Know Endings

If we move the pawns one rank back, they will not be able to win without the support of the king. But if the white king is far, the pawns will perish since they will not be able to defend each other. The common square ends on the seventh rank. This means that the pawns cannot reach the promotion square without the aid of their king.

The pawns two files apart cannot defend each other.

Common square ends on seventh rank. Pawns are lost without the help of their king.
