When the pawns are only one file apart, converting advantage into victory is much more complicated, especially when the passed pawn is behind the blockaded pawns. White has difficulty manoeuvring and Black usually has a chance to save the game by attacking the blockaded pawn. As we saw in the previous case, a critical situation arises with the blockaded pawns on the fourth and fifth ranks since then the position usually transposes into a won queen ending.
