Much more complicated are endgames with the white king in front of the pawn, having a great practical value. Two basic position types are distinguished with regards to the position of the black king and his position towards the pawn. The position is not favourable with the king on the longer side, when the rook must satisfy with the shorter side to check sideways, which is rarely sufficient to get by. A typical position of the kind with the central pawn can be seen on the diagram
