This statement will be proven in analysis of several characteristic situations. Let us first examine the simplest case with the black king on the central file. Despite the black king tied down along the seventh rank, White to move cannot win. A good co-operation between the knight and king may help Black avert mating threats, without sending the knight too far from the king.
