When he has a passed pawn, Black easily draws if he can force the reduction of the material by counterattacking the opposing pawn. The simplest way to achieve this goal is often first to exchange the rook because it eliminates the most dangerous tactical threats. We see a typical example in the ending of the game Bazan-Gligorić, Buenos Aires 1960.

Vlado Kovacevic is a chess grandmaster and an endgame expert. He very successfully competed on the national team. From 2000 – 2004, he acted as selector of the Croatian Men’s national team. He is also a well-known chess author.
